The Independent newspaper reports how the purchase of new Gallery premises in London will allow the art of the camera to receive its due.
A £3.5m pledge from Arts Council England has enabled the purchase of new freehold premises in the heart of Soho at 16-18 Ramillies Street.
The Photographers Gallery first opened its doors in 1971 and has been pivotal in launching some major British talent.
However the status of photography in the UK still lags behind its European and US counterparts. The director of the gallery, Paul Wombell, hopes this will go a long way to redressing the balance.
More funds are still needed to compete the project. It is hoped the gallery will open before the end of the decade.
