DIG 10 year anniversary Podcast

Date January 20, 2007

DIG reunion

Ten and a half years ago on 15 May 1996 a group of anoraks met in a damp dark cellar (better known as Ian McKinnell’s, brightly lit and not damp at all, second floor studio in London) to plot the digital overthrow of the photographic industry… or so it was perceived by those who worked with film at the time. They became known as the Digital Imaging Group.

That first meeting aimed to enable a discourse amongst the handful of photographers then using the medium and to establish a common frame of reference for the use and handling of digital files from capture to final use.
Amongst other things the idea of exchanging views by email was proposed that night and the Prodig List was born a while later.

That same group of people met on 18 January 2007 once again in Ian McKinnell’s studio… to review the last ten years and look at what digital photography holds in store for the future.

Attending were (left to right) Bob Marchant, Ian McKinnell, Mike Russell, Ed Horwich, Martin Evening, Adam Woolfitt, Colin Thomas, Carl Lyttle, Mike Laye, Douglas Fisher, Paul Webster.

The evening kicked off by watching a CD video presentation about all this new fangled digital stuff, which we published exactly ten years ago. It featured interviews with a cross section from the industry at the time, ad agencies, digital experts etc. They talk about how they regarded the digital images media at the time, what they predicted for its future and just how long that might take. Its amazing how accurate some of those predictions have been.

Colin Thomas then proceeded to sit us down and start a round table discussion taking a look back at where this digital journey had taken us each individually and what our predictions were for the next ten years.

I joined ProDig way back in the nineties to talk Photoshop. Owning a digital camera then was just not on the cards as they cost a small mortgage. When they become affordable around about the turn of the century, I was glad I already knew a considerable amount just by reading all the posts from the knowledgeable and, no doubt, heavily mortgaged pioneers. I also received a lot of help when it came to choosing a digital camera. So, a heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to my knowledge and to the list owners and listmums for making it all possible. Long may you all prosper. Cheers!

Wonderful podcast. Thanks. As an artist who uses digital photography to photograph my subjects and backgrounds, and photoshop to mock-up images to then paint in oils, I was fascinated by the debate.
Once upon a time all fine artists had to make their own materials – grind their own paints &c. Now anyone can buy vivid and permanent colours from an art shop.
You no longer have to be a technician to produce a good oil painting, just an artist. I think it is the same with digital photography. The artist will always be needed whatever the technology. At least I hope so!
