BTinternet outage

Date September 28, 2009

There was a suspected mailserver outage by the BTinternet ISP on Saturday 26 September. This caused Prodig messages to some subscribers to be rejected. As a result the automated systems on Prodig kicked in and temporarily suspended mail being sent to these subscribers.

(BT also manage some Yahoo services, so Yahoo mail addresses were also affected)

If you have been affected, its easy to reset your account and receive messages once more. Just login to your Prodig account and uncheck the “No Mail” option.

More details about accessing your account can be found on the HELP Page.

The joys and tribulations of tearing around Africa

Date August 14, 2009

By Norman Childs -

The joys and tribulations of tearing around Africa. The former created by those who already know the continent through significant experience. The latter, by those who don’t and expect it to be exactly like Europe traversed by Ryanair.

Such was the nature of our most recent foray; firstly to Mozambique to photograph a titanium mine; then to South Africa for some fun and meetings for prospective work later in the year and finally rounding off with an extended programme of work in oil exploration in Northern Uganda.

The issue during these trips, is not to get frustrated by clients whose expectations Read the rest of this entry »

Vastly improved onOne DSLR remote

Date July 18, 2009

dslr remote 1.1

onOne has released the 1.1 update for their DSLR remote application that will now fire Nikon as well as Canon cameras from your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Rob Galbraith has an extension test report and reckons that this version is really the first truly functional iteration of the application. At only a couple of months old since it first saw the public light of day, it seems to indicate huge promise for becoming a major application as its development continues.

National Photography Syposium

symposium interviews on vimeo

Last weekend was Redeye’s Symposium in Manchester. Lots of people to meet, some completely new, others I’d only chatted to in email or that I know from Prodig… and even then couldn’t meet them all. And venue in the heart of the city, Chethams Library (pronounced Cheethams), is steeped in history and is where Marx and Engles spent some time pursuing their writings.

For the most part I spent the weekend keeping a Twitter stream going on the hashtag #NPS1. Others were doing the same and if we were in different sessions it meant you could keep up with more than one room at a time. I hope those who were following remotely on Twitter could make sense of that. Certainly we seemed to have a following, with one bit of feedback coming from as far away as Singapore.

I was toying with the idea of doing some Tweets whilst chairing my alloted session (speakers were Yasmina Reggad and David Hoffman on Photographer Collectives and Stock Libraries). Decided against it in the end but now I’m not so sure. I think it would have been a more concise way of keeping notes… I scrawled far too many by hand… 140 characters really does concentrate the mind very effectively.

Anyway, my other self-imposed job was to grab as many off the cuff interviews as I could. Looking back I would have liked to have got more, but you really do have to be on your toes to do that and keep tweeting.

So here they are… 7 interviews with 8 people, plus Ian McMillan’s very funny conference address on the opening evening.

Quick guide to Twitter for mobile

Date June 9, 2009

twitter-logoweb506Here’s a very brief intro to some applications and services which will help you Twitter on mobile devices as well as on your regular computer.

• Dedicated Twitter applications allow you to organize your Twitter communications efficiently.
• Don’t worry if your phone won’t support a dedicated app, there are some web based services which emulate them quite well.
• However if you are mainly interested in following a specific person or topic you can do this effectively just by using Twitter.com and its companion web sites.
