symposium interviews on vimeo

Last weekend was Redeye’s Symposium in Manchester. Lots of people to meet, some completely new, others I’d only chatted to in email or that I know from Prodig… and even then couldn’t meet them all. And venue in the heart of the city, Chethams Library (pronounced Cheethams), is steeped in history and is where Marx and Engles spent some time pursuing their writings.

For the most part I spent the weekend keeping a Twitter stream going on the hashtag #NPS1. Others were doing the same and if we were in different sessions it meant you could keep up with more than one room at a time. I hope those who were following remotely on Twitter could make sense of that. Certainly we seemed to have a following, with one bit of feedback coming from as far away as Singapore.

I was toying with the idea of doing some Tweets whilst chairing my alloted session (speakers were Yasmina Reggad and David Hoffman on Photographer Collectives and Stock Libraries). Decided against it in the end but now I’m not so sure. I think it would have been a more concise way of keeping notes… I scrawled far too many by hand… 140 characters really does concentrate the mind very effectively.

Anyway, my other self-imposed job was to grab as many off the cuff interviews as I could. Looking back I would have liked to have got more, but you really do have to be on your toes to do that and keep tweeting.

So here they are… 7 interviews with 8 people, plus Ian McMillan’s very funny conference address on the opening evening.

iPhone Canon WiFi remote

Date May 27, 2009

dslr_remote_coming_soonThere’s a new iPhone app on its way from onOne to control your Canon DSLR.

Here’s a quick run down.
1. You need either an iPhone or an iPod Touch
2. You need a supported Canon EOS DSLR
3. A laptop or desktop computer running the free companion DSLR Remote Server software
4. A USB cable to connect your supported Canon EOS DSLR camera to the computer running the free server software

The DSLR Remote app running on your iPhone (or iPod Touch) communicates to the DSLR Remote Server software via a WIFI connection.

From your iPhone you can control settings such as shutter speed, aperture and white balance. You can of course fire the camera shutter as well. If you have a Canon EOS DSLR camera that supports Live View you can even get a live stream of the camera’s viewfinder on your iPhone. You also get an Intervalometer so you can do time lapse photography.

The version of the DSLR Remote application referred to is the Professional version which will sell for $19.99 on the iTunes App Store, but will be offered for $9.99 as an introductory price. A “Lite” version will also be available for $1.99 that only fires the shutter. The required server software that runs on your Mac or Windows computer will be a free download from the onOne website.
